Cranky Old Men & their 10% Veterans Discount.
SHIFT: 9:30am - 6:30pm

****************

I woke up this morning pretty bummed that I had to come in on what was supposed to be my day off from the Depot. I had switched with a fellow cashier to cover her shift while she took care of some urgent matters. It was no big deal, I would have to be at returns for my whole shift, which usually helps the day go much faster. My day off rotated to Wednesday instead.

So I came in on time and the minute I came in, I was informed I'd be head cashier instead. Our opening head cashier for the day, Linda, had spent most of the time in the bathroom, really not feeling well. She was going home early, so I took the keys and instead became head cashier. Due to the extreme on and off again rain, we've been pretty dead all day, so coverage wasn't all that hard to come by.

I rewrote the break schedule for the cashiers and even finished the Shrink Plan for my FES Justin, so it would be ready in time for Wednesday's Staff meeting.

Then, as I was finishing it ... we had the most ... "wonderful" elderly customer.

It was an elderly man, who was purchasing a few things at Self Checkout. He claimed to be a veteran and was looking to get his 10% Veteran discount off his purchase.

PROBLEM: Customer did not have his military ID, he claimed it had been shredded over the years and that he is in reserves. Unless a military ID is present, we cannot put thru a miltary discount. Its policy.

The customer decided to get overly irrate at this when our SCO [Self Checkout] associate, Elena explained that to him very nicely. He bellowed and told us that he shouldn't need his ID, that he has a hat and that should be enough.

[ ... crickets chirp .... ]

I almost couldn't believe he was actually fucking serious. "I have a military hat, that should be enough ..." , is probably the dumbest answer he could of given us. The military hat he was wearing could easily be purchased online or at any salvation army store. He must be delusional in his old age. Due to his unnecessary bellowing and anger, we told him that we will process a 10% discount for him, but he would need his ID next time he wished to use his military discount. Seconds afterwards, a customer had bumped into a pole the elderly man was going to purchase, making it drop to the floor.

Again, being so miserable and already on a tirade, the elderly man didn't want the pole since it fell and walked off back inside the store to get a new pole. UTTER RIDICULOUSNESS. I've never been more tempted to punch an old man in the face, since he decided to yell into mine when I came over, as a Head Cashier, since he wanted to complain to someone. But as everyone knows, bitch enough and you get what you want.

**ATTENTION & FYI TO ANY AND ALL HOME DEPOT CUSTOMERS**
The Veterans/Military Discount, isn't even suppose to be 10%. The actual percentage off your suppose to receive is 1%. Yeah. Believe it. That is from HD Corporate themselves. So in the end, the HD Stores are actually doing you a favor by giving you 10% when you provide your military discount. So seeing as how we're being so generous, I don't think we deserve to have people get in our face and complain when they cant' receive a discount because they don't have their ID.

If you don't have your ID, then just come back another day with your ID to the Home Depot store and we can easily refund/rering the receipt for you WITH your 10% military ID.

Seriously. Educate yourselves before you start yelling at HD associates.

Thank You.
